The Fear of the Unknown: How It Steals Our Joy and How to Take It Back

There’s an unusual ache that grips us when we think of what lies beyond our understanding , the fear of the unknown. It’s not about the things we can see or touch, but the shadows that lurk just out of reach.

Ever noticed how the mind loves to race with thoughts of what’s next? Ever caught yourself spiraling into endless "what ifs"? Hearing echos of What if I fail? What if I lose someone I care about? What if something takes a heavy toll on my health? It’s exhausting, isn’t it?

We find comfort in the familiar, in the things we know well. We know what to expect from them, how they shape our day to day lives, how they make us feel whether it's joy, pain or something in between But the unknown? It’s a riddle that fuels assumptions and overthinking. We don't know what’s coming, and that uncertainty can become a breeding ground for fear, anxiety, and overthinking.

Why Do We Fear What Hasn’t Happened?

It’s human nature to want control ,we crave certainty. We like planning, preparing, and knowing what’s coming. But life doesn’t work like that. The future is unpredictable, and no amount of worrying will ever change that. And as we swim in these fears we drown out the present which is the only time that truly matters.
Here’s a hard truth: life is messy ,uncertain and chaotic. One day, everything feels perfect and the next, it’s like the universe is throwing curveballs left and right. But that’s also what makes it beautiful. Without the unknown there would be no room for growth, for surprises, for change. If we knew exactly what was coming next what would be the point of living? Wouldn’t life become boring?

The Paradox of Death and Life

One of the most gut wrenching fears is death. We are terrified of the end of our existence and yet at our lowest we sometimes wish for it as an escape.
Isn’t that strange? But here’s something to think about : Dying? that’s the easy part. But living oh, now that’s the real grind. You need effort, courage, and a truckload of patience just to get through a day. But hey, that’s where all the "magic" happens right?. You know, the love, the laughter, and those endless moments that make you want to scream and hug your pillow at the same time . Yeah, all of that only happens because surprise you’re still breathing.

Breaking Free from the Fear

The fear of the unknown can feel like a massive asteroid overhead ready to strike. When we let these fears dominate our minds, we unintentionally bring them closer to reality. Fear thrives on our attention. When we stop letting it control our thoughts, it loses its grip.
Here's something: When faced with a problem, we often feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to move forward.
 • Imagine drawing a circle around that problem.
 • Then write down everything that’s stopping you from solving it.
 • As you reflect, you may realize that most of what’s inside that circle isn’t the actual problem it’s a story you’ve built around it.

This story, fueled by fear of the unknown, becomes the biggest obstacle in your path.

The Power of Stories We Tell Ourselves

The human mind has a natural tendency to create narratives. We imagine worst case scenarios creating problems in our minds that are not even bound to happen . Instead of focusing on facts, we get trapped in a web of our own thoughts restricting our ability to act.

 Facts vs. Fiction

When you think critically you'll realize that the real facts of a situation are often much simpler than the story you tell yourself. Facts are objective, clear, and straightforward, without the emotional weight of the story you've created.

For example: Instead of thinking "I don’t know how to handle maths ,its just not my piece of cake," you might recognize the facts:
 • I haven’t asked for help yet
 • I haven’t put in enough time and effort,
 • I haven’t even started.
 You could also think,
 • I can research and tackle some of it
 • I need to stop worrying about what others think.

The difference between fact and fiction is subtle but significant. By focusing on the facts you can break free from the feardriven story and move forward with a solutiondriven approach.

 1. Identify the Story: Recognize the fears and assumptions you're telling yourself.
 2. Focus on Facts: Write down the actual problem free of emotion.
3. Take Small Steps: Break the problem into manageable tasks to reduce anxiety.
 4. Challenge the Unknown: Ask yourself what the worst outcome really is it’s often not as bad as you think.

Let’s be honest there's no sugarcoating it. Life's tough, but it's also incredible. You're here reading this with so much potential ahead of you. You've made it through my boring ,prolonged write up, even when you probably wanted to quit a few times and that's how you'll tackle life. Don’t let fear take that away. The unknown might seem scary but it's also full of exciting possibilities!

 Turning Fear Into Growth

The unknown doesn’t have to be scary. It’s actually a chance to grow, learn, and transform! By focusing on the facts and ditching the drama in your head, you take back control. Instead of fearing what’s ahead, get curious and see it as an opportunity, not a threat.
Remember, the story you tell yourself can either hold you back or set you free. So, focus on the facts, take charge, and dive into the unknown expecting the unexpected!

Here's throwing light on it as a poem :)

2025: Halfway Past Something | Reflections on Time, Growth, and New Beginnings

Is it just me, or does 2025 feel like we’re halfway past something ?  I don’t quite know how to put this into words, but a new year feels heavier than wishes, firecrackers, grapes at midnight, Instagram stories, resolutions, and vision boards. Beneath all that glitter, there’s a quieter truth we don’t talk about enough: We are leaving behind 365 days of us . Three hundred sixtyf ive unique mornings. Different versions of ourselves. Moments we survived without even realizing they were survival. Laughs we didn’t know would be the last of their kind. Pain that reshaped us quietly.. And where do those days go? Do they dissolve somewhere? Do they sit folded in time? Or do they live inside us, kinda changing us molecule by molecule? We celebrate the arrival of a new year .....but what about grieving the old one? What about honoring the year that held us when we were breaking? The year that didn’t give us everything we asked for, but still gave us lessons and teachings that we w...

It's All About Perspective

Ever Had a Change of Heart? Have you ever sworn you'd never do something, only to find yourself enjoying it years later? Like the one vegetable that grossed you out when you were younger but now eagerly put on your plate? Or the notion of wearing traditional clothes, going to the gym, or reading mythology once made you roll your eyes, but now you're all in? Why does this happen? The truth is, it’s rarely about the thing itself , it’s more about how it was introduced to us . Our environment, upbringing, and cultural norms create our first impressions, usually leading us to fight against things that, in reality, could have been fun, helpful, or even beautiful .   Cooking: Not a Chore, But an Art I thought I despised cooking. When I was younger, it was always presented to me as something a girl should learn because "one day you'll get married." That alone was enough to make me push back. I would protest, saying   I wouldn't do it! Not because I truly h...

The Weight of Words: Overcoming Insecurities

Today’s incident taught me something profound about insecurities. This evening, as I stepped into the lift of my hostel, a few people joined me. Moments later, two girls entered, laughing and giggling, seemingly carefree. But my eyes were drawn to one of them , her arm bore a deep mark, possibly a burn scar, one that seemed permanent and painful. While I wondered what her story might be, I noticed two other girls whispering and giggling while pointing at her feet. One of them said, loud enough for anyone to hear,  "She could audition for those weird videos on YouTube ‘World’s 10 Most Bizarre Body Parts,’ one of them smirked , pointing at her feet. The words were so cruel, they stung me, and I wasn’t even the target. Instinctively, my irritation rose. I looked down, noticing her feet for the first time. One toe was missing, replaced by a large lump of skin. It wasn’t her feet, though, that caught my attention next it was her body language. She stopped smiling. Her face dulled, and ...
